One of the most common questions we get in the office is, “how do those light touches make such a big change in my body?” It’s an understandable query: our adjustment technique utilizes only 4-6 ounces of pressure on the spine- about the amount of force it takes to flick on a light switch. So how do we accomplish such dramatic improvements in the quality of spinal performance and, ultimately, quality of life of our patients with such little input?
The answer lies in the unique clinical approach of Network Spinal Care. What many people don’t realize is that it is normal for the spine to become tense and tight and even misaligned-temporarily– as an emergency adaptation to stress. However, when that stress is gone, the spine should revert back to its resting state of ease and alignment and balance. If a stressor is too intense or too repetitive, the emergency adaptations may get “stuck” in a state of self-perpetuation: they become disconnected from the Brain and the current flow of data that is coming in about the internal and external world. There is a disconnect between the adapted part of the body and the Brain.
It is often not enough to simply try to restore the tissues back to a state of balance, because without reconnecting the adaptive area to the central neural network, the area will tend to try to restore the adaptive measures- it has not received word, in a sense, that the trauma is over.
Connecting to Correct means that rather than trying to change, from the outside-in, the tone or position or alignment or mobility of tissues that are doing all they can to resist that change, we simply devote our energy towards restoring the Connection between the adaptive area and the Brain/Nervous System.
What happens next is the real miracle of Network Care. Because the natural result of a restored Connection is Correction: the body, once it is plugged into the now-moment data flow, will naturally and spontaneously engage restorative measures: the spontaneous release of tension, realignment of structures, restoration of nerve flow. This manifests as a powerful respiratory impulse- enhanced breathing; as well as spontaneous spinal and body movement. The correction is manifested from the inside-out, not the outside-in. It is natural, spontaneous, and orchestrated by the body’s own intelligence.
So we don’t need to use a lot of force to make a massive correction. All we need to do is make the right connection, and the correction naturally and spontaneously follows.
